چکیده

Transient development of perturbations in inviscid stratified shear flow is investigated. Use is made of closed form analytic solutions that allow concise identification of optimally growing plane-wave solutions for the case ofan unbounded flow with constant shear and stratification. For the case of channel flow, variational techniques are employed to determine the optimally growing disturbances. The maximum energy growth attained over a specific time interval decreases continuously with increasing stratification, and no special significance attaches to Ri = 0.25. Indeed, transient growth can be substantial even for Ri = 0( 1 ). A general lower bound on the energy growth attained by an optimal perturbation in a stratified flow over a given time interval is the square root of the growth attained by the corresponding perturbation in unstratified flow. Enhanced perturbation persistence is found for mean-flow stratification lying in the range 0.1 < Ri < 0.3. Small but finite perturbations in mean flow with Ri < 0.4 produce regions with locally negative total density gradient, which are expected to overturn. Although the perturbations are of wave form, buoyancy fluxes mediate transfer between perturbation kinetic and potential energy during transient development, thus implying that buoyancy flux is not a determinative diagnostic for distinguishing between waves and turbulence in stratified flows.

Transient and asymptotic growth of two-dimensional perturbations in viscous compressible shear flow

A comprehensive assessment is made of transient and asymptotic two-dimensional perturbation growth in compressible shear flow using unbounded constant shear and the Couette problem as examples. The unbounded shear flow example captures the essential dynamics of the rapid transient growth processes at high Mach numbers, while excitation by nonmodal mechanisms of nearly neutral modes supported by...

Linear Theory of Thin, Radially-Stratified Disks

We consider the nonaxisymmetric linear theory of radially-stratified disks. We work in a shearing-sheet-like approximation, where the vertical structure of the disk is neglected, and develop equations for the evolution of a plane-wave perturbation comoving with the shear flow (a shearing wave, or “shwave”). We calculate a complete solution set for compressive and incompressive short-wavelength ...

Frequency domain analysis of transient flow in pipelines; application of the genetic programming to reduce the linearization errors

The transient flow analyzing by the frequency domain method (FDM) is computationally much faster than the method of characteristic (MOC) in the time domain. FDM needs no discretization in time and space, but requires the linearization of governing equations and boundary conditions. Hence, the FDM is only valid for small perturbations in which the system’s hydraulics is almost linear. In this st...

Linear stability, transient energy growth, and the role of viscosity stratification in compressible plane Couette flow.

Linear stability and the nonmodal transient energy growth in compressible plane Couette flow are investigated for two prototype mean flows: (a) the uniform shear flow with constant viscosity, and (b) the nonuniform shear flow with stratified viscosity. Both mean flows are linearly unstable for a range of supersonic Mach numbers (M). For a given M , the critical Reynolds number (Re) is significa...

Hydrodynamic stability and mode coupling in Keplerian flows: local strato-rotational analysis

Aims. We present a qualitative analysis of key (but yet unappreciated) linear phenomena in stratified hydrodynamic Keplerian flows: (i) the occurrence of a vortex mode, as a consequence of strato-rotational balance, with its transient dynamics; (ii) the generation of spiral-density waves (also called inertia-gravity or gΩ waves) by the vortex mode through linear mode coupling in shear flows. Me...
